Certainty-Score - Detection of answer certainty

Estimated reading: 2 minutes

In this article we explain everything you need to know about the Certainty-Score (CS). This score makes it possible to determine how convinced respondents are of their answers (answer certainty).

Certainty-Score evaluates over- and underestimation of own answer

  • The Certainty Score (CS) assesses the degree of certainty and conviction with which respondents give their answers. The CS measures the tendency of respondents to overestimate their own answers compared to others, also known as the False Consensus Effect..
  • Since overestimating one's own answer is a natural psychological effect and is thus »expectable«, respondents who overestimate their own answer receive a high Certainty-Score.
  • In order to use the Certainty-Score, projective question sets must be added to the questionnaire.

The False Consensus Effect

The false consensus effect generally describes the tendency of people to overestimate the frequency of their own preferences and opinions compared to those of others who do not share these preferences and opinions. This tendency is clearly shown in the following diagram. The blue bar represents the collective estimate of people who gave the same answer as oneself, while the gray bar represents the collective estimate of people who gave a different answer.

The CS as quality criteria for ill-considered answers

  • Relevant for the Certainty Score is the fact that respondents overestimate the frequency of their opinion or attitude the more certain they are of their opinion. The premise is: the stronger the conviction, the higher the overestimation compared to those who disagree.
  • A low Certainty Score can thus be an indication of uncertainty in the answer, but also a sign of an ill-considered answer.

Applications and fields of use

The Certainty-Score can be used independently of the survey method. The only prerequisite is the integration of projective question sets.
