Time-Score - Evaluation of the interview duration

Estimated reading: 2 minutes

In this article, we will show you how the Time-Score works to evaluate interview duration and how you can use it.

Calculation of the individual Time-Scores

The evaluation is done by comparing the response time of one interview with the median response time of the other interviews.

Time-Scores are calculated as follows:

  • <10% of the median = 0
  • >10% - <50% of the median = 0-50
  • >50% - 400% - 1000% of the median = 50-80
  • >80% - 400% of the median = 80-100

Important: Time-Scores are calculated only when the sample size is at least 30, as the median interview duration is not sufficiently meaningful below this limit.

Calculation of the total score

Time-Scores are calculated individually for each of the specified interview duration variables and then combined into a total score. To ensure that the score obtained is meaningful, we recommend not only providing the total interview duration (LOI), but also providing as many individual duration values as possible.

Scoring groups

  • By using a "scoring group variable," Time Scores are calculated only within these groups. The median of the subgroup is used to score an interview from this specific subgroup.
  • The scoring groups should be applied when it is not possible to compare the response times of the respondents. This occurs when there is a mix of CATI and CAWI interviews or when there are significant differences between the desktop and mobile versions of a questionnaire.
  • In order to include scoring groups in the interview time analysis, they must be set during the upload process. For more information, read this Article.
  • In the detailed view of the Time Scores, it is possible to filter by all scoring groups.
